Odoo vs Custom-Built ERP

The build-it-ourselves ERP conversation usually starts honourably: ‘our business is unique, off-the-shelf won’t fit.’ Having spent 11 years customising Odoo (and having built platform-scale systems on it), our view is precise: your differentiator deserves custom code; your purchase orders don’t.

Odoo’s open source changes this comparison fundamentally, because ‘buy’ includes unlimited ‘build’ where it counts.

Where the real differences are

  • The 80/20 that decides it. Roughly 80% of any business system is undifferentiated plumbing: orders, stock moves, invoices, VAT, user permissions. Custom builds spend most of their budget re-solving solved problems before touching the 20% that makes you special.
  • Open source dissolves the dichotomy. With proprietary ERPs, buy means accepting limits. Odoo’s code is open: the standard 80% comes free and battle-tested, and the differentiating 20% is custom development on a stable foundation. This is precisely how we’ve built for clients, up to a 150+ merchant platform.
  • Total-lifetime honesty. Custom systems cost their build price, then cost it again in maintenance: security patches, framework updates, the bus-factor of the developers who understand it. Odoo’s core evolution is funded by the ecosystem; you maintain only your delta.
  • Where full-custom is genuinely right. When the system IS the product (you’re selling the software), or when a narrow tool with no ERP surface is truly all you need. Real cases exist; internal ERPs for trading businesses are almost never among them.
  • The rescue pattern we see. A meaningful share of our enquiries are custom-ERP rescues: the founder-developer left, the framework aged, the business grew past the design. The migration path out exists, and it’s smoother the earlier it starts.

How we’d help you choose

  1. Requirements from your operation, not a feature grid. We map how your business actually runs and which capabilities are load-bearing rather than nice to have. Feature checklists reward the vendor with the longest list, not the best fit for you.
  2. Total cost over five years, written down. Licensing, implementation, customisation, hosting, and the ongoing cost of the workarounds you’d keep. The honest number is rarely the sticker price on either side.
  3. The customisation and lock-in test. What happens when you need something the standard product doesn’t do, and how hard it is to leave later. This is where open source changes the maths, and where we’ll say so plainly.
  4. A proof before a commitment. Where it matters, we’d rather show the awkward part of your workflow running than argue about it in a slide. Evidence beats persuasion.
  5. An honest recommendation, even against us. We implement Odoo, so read us accordingly, but we’d rather lose a project than win a bad fit. If the alternative is right for you, we’ll say so.

Common questions

Our processes really are unique though.
Some are, and those get custom modules. Discovery separates genuinely unique (build it) from unusually configured standard (configure it), and the ratio surprises almost every founder in the same direction.
We already half-built our own system. Sunk cost?
Not entirely: the business logic you encoded is requirements gold. We routinely migrate custom-system logic into Odoo modules, preserving the thinking while retiring the maintenance burden.
Isn't depending on Odoo just different lock-in?
Materially different: open code, open data (PostgreSQL), a global ecosystem of interchangeable partners, and your customisations owned by you. Compare that exit position with a proprietary vendor's or a departed developer's.
If you build our custom parts, who owns the code?
You do. It sits in your repository under your control, and any competent Odoo developer can maintain it. That's the point of building the differentiated 20% on an open foundation rather than from scratch.
What happens if we change partner later?
Odoo partners are interchangeable by design, and your data is a standard PostgreSQL database. Compare that with a bespoke system whose only expert is the person who wrote it, or a proprietary ERP whose exit story is a sales objection.
