Odoo Data Migration & Cleansing

Data migration is the part of every project where trust is won or lost. Your new system’s credibility on day one equals the quality of the data inside it: customers that match, stock that counts, balances that reconcile. ‘We’ll clean it later’ is how implementations acquire permanent asterisks.

We migrate data with the same reconciliation discipline whether it’s arriving from spreadsheets, a legacy ERP, or an older Odoo.

What the work involves

  • Source archaeology. Extracting truth from wherever it lives: old ERPs, ecommerce platforms, accounting packages, and the inevitable network drive of spreadsheets.
  • Cleansing with rules, not heroics. Deduplication, standardisation and validation as documented, repeatable transformations, so the cleanse is auditable and re-runnable, not one person’s weekend.
  • Reconciliation at every gate. Counts and values compared source-to-target at each stage: what left, what landed, what was excluded and the reason. Sign-off happens on evidence.
  • Open-item precision. Outstanding invoices, open orders and stock on hand migrated to reconcile with your accountant’s closing position to the penny.
  • Rehearsed like everything else. Migration runs fully on staging first. Go-live re-runs a proven script against a fresh cut of data.

How the migration runs

  1. Audit and triage. Every customisation, module and data object inventoried and sorted: port it, retire it, or replace it with what newer Odoo now does natively.
  2. Fixed quote from the audit. The number arrives with an hours breakdown per module, before the commitment.
  3. Staging rehearsal with production data. The full migration runs end to end on staging, and your team tests real workflows against sign-off checklists.
  4. Reconciliation sign-off. Record counts and value checks per model prove nothing was lost. Evidence, not assurance.
  5. Planned cutover with rollback. A scheduled window around your trading calendar, a step-by-step runbook, and a tested way back.

Common questions

How clean does our data need to be before you start?
Bring it as it is; assessment is the first step. We'll show you what's dirty, what matters and what's cosmetic, then agree cleansing scope with real examples rather than fear.
How much history should we migrate?
Open items always; history to a defined depth by object. Deep archives often serve better in a read-only legacy instance than as migration cost. It's an explicit decision, not a default.
Can you do GDPR-compliant selective migration?
Yes, including anonymisation of personal data where retention isn't justified. We've advised on Odoo right-to-be-forgotten tooling and apply the same thinking at migration time.
Who signs off that the data is right?
Named owners on your side per data domain: finance signs balances, operations signs stock, sales signs customers. Sign-off happens on reconciliation evidence we provide, not on trust.
Can you merge data from multiple old systems into one Odoo?
Yes, multi-source consolidation with cross-system deduplication is a common shape of this work, and exactly where the documented-rules approach earns its keep.
