Odoo vs Shopify (as backend)
This one isn’t platform versus platform; it’s a question of job description. Shopify is a world-class sales frontend. The comparison is whether Shopify plus its app stack can be your operational backend, and past a certain scale the honest answer is no, which is why the real architecture is Shopify AND Odoo, not versus.

Where the real differences are
- What Shopify’s backend does well. Checkout, catalogue presentation, marketing integrations and channel selling. Within one store and light operations, its admin plus a few apps is genuinely sufficient.
- Where it structurally stops. Multi-warehouse logic, purchasing and supplier management, landed costs, real accounting, B2B terms, manufacturing: these aren’t Shopify weaknesses to patch with apps, they’re outside its design. App stacks simulating them create the sync chaos everyone recognises.
- The app-stack tax. Fifteen apps at £30-100 monthly, each holding a slice of truth, none agreeing: the classic Chaos Plateau. The subscription total approaches ERP cost while delivering fragments of ERP function.
- The right division of labour. Shopify stays the storefront it excels at; Odoo becomes the operational master: one stock pool, purchasing, fulfilment, accounting. Orders flow in, stock and tracking flow back. Each system does its actual job.
- When Shopify-only remains right. Single channel, single stock location, modest SKU count, accounting comfortably in Xero: keep it simple, genuinely. The switch point arrives with channels, warehouses or the daily reconciliation spreadsheet.

- Requirements from your operation, not a feature grid. We map how your business actually runs and which capabilities are load-bearing rather than nice to have. Feature checklists reward the vendor with the longest list, not the best fit for you.
- Total cost over five years, written down. Licensing, implementation, customisation, hosting, and the ongoing cost of the workarounds you’d keep. The honest number is rarely the sticker price on either side.
- The customisation and lock-in test. What happens when you need something the standard product doesn’t do, and how hard it is to leave later. This is where open source changes the maths, and where we’ll say so plainly.
- A proof before a commitment. Where it matters, we’d rather show the awkward part of your workflow running than argue about it in a slide. Evidence beats persuasion.
- An honest recommendation, even against us. We implement Odoo, so read us accordingly, but we’d rather lose a project than win a bad fit. If the alternative is right for you, we’ll say so.

Shopify Plus solves this though, right?

Do we replace our Shopify apps when Odoo arrives?
The operational ones (inventory, purchasing, some reporting), yes, and their subscriptions with them. Marketing and storefront apps stay. We'll map your stack app by app in discovery.
What does the combined architecture cost to run?
Shopify subscription plus modest Odoo licensing plus connector maintenance, typically less than a mature app stack, with radically better data. We'll price it against your current stack honestly.
Can we add Odoo without disrupting the store?
Yes. Odoo takes over the back office (stock, purchasing, accounting) first while Shopify keeps serving customers exactly as it does now. The storefront doesn't change; what changes is what happens after someone clicks buy.
