Why Odoo Wins

Why Odoo Wins Over Shopify Plus + Spreadsheets

Shopify Plus plus spreadsheets is the most common operating system in scaling DTC, and it’s a trap with excellent branding. Plus upgrades your storefront; the spreadsheets remain your actual ERP: unversioned, error-prone, dependent on whoever built them. Our argued position: the upgrade that matters isn’t your Shopify tier, it’s retiring the spreadsheets.

This is the pattern behind most of our retail enquiries, so we know its endgame well.

The case, point by point

  • Plus solves the wrong bottleneck. Checkout throughput and storefront flexibility were rarely your constraint; stock truth, purchasing and reconciliation were. Plus’s fee buys frontend headroom while the back office stays on Excel.
  • Spreadsheets fail silently, then loudly. A formula edit, a stale export, a sick day for the one person who understands the master sheet: spreadsheet failure modes are invisible until they’re an oversell weekend or a VAT scramble.
  • The human middleware bill. Count the hours: morning stock updates, order exports, reconciliation sessions. At scaling volume that’s a salary or two spent being the sync layer software should be, and those people were hired to grow the business.
  • What the real fix looks like. Keep Shopify (Plus or not) as the storefront it excels at; put Odoo behind it as the operational truth: one stock pool, automated purchasing, accounting that reconciles itself, connected properly.
  • The maths usually surprises. Plus fees plus app stack plus spreadsheet labour versus standard Shopify plus Odoo plus our connector: the second column frequently costs less while removing the failure modes. We’ll run your numbers plainly.

How we’d prove the case, not just argue it

  1. A costed comparison on your real numbers. Your licences, your app-stack fees, your hours lost to manual work, not a generic claim. The argument on this page only matters if the maths holds for your business.
  2. A proof of concept on your hardest workflow. The process that strains or breaks today, running on Odoo before you commit. We’d rather show it working than promise it will.
  3. A staged switch that keeps you trading. Module by module or channel by channel, with the old system live until each piece is proven. No big-bang cutover, no held breath.
  4. Reconciliation as evidence. Record counts and value checks that prove nothing was lost in the move. Sign-off on numbers, not reassurance.
  5. Exit rights baked in. You own the code and the PostgreSQL database, and Odoo partners are interchangeable by design. The case for switching includes the freedom to switch again.

Common questions

Do we even need Plus once Odoo handles operations?
Sometimes not: several Plus features exist to compensate for missing backend capability. Post-Odoo, review whether checkout customisation and B2B features still justify the tier; downgrade money is real money.
Our spreadsheet system works though. Why change what works?
It works at today's volume with today's people. The question is Black Friday at next year's volume when the sheet's author is on holiday. Resilience is the product here.
How disruptive is the transition?
Shopify stays live and untouched throughout; Odoo builds and rehearses alongside, then takes over backend duties at a planned cutover. Trading continues; the spreadsheets retire gradually, then entirely.
