Odoo vs Zoho One
Zoho One’s pitch is seductive: fifty-plus apps, one subscription, one vendor. And for sales-and-service businesses it can genuinely work. The comparison with Odoo sharpens around operations: when inventory, fulfilment and accounting integrity become the core problem, suite breadth and ERP depth are different things.
Here’s where each actually belongs.
Where the real differences are
- Suite versus system. Zoho One is many applications sharing a login and sync layers; Odoo is one database where sales, stock, purchasing and accounting are the same records. For operational businesses, that architectural difference surfaces as reconciliation work Zoho users do and Odoo users don’t.
- Operational depth. Zoho Inventory and Books are competent at light complexity. Multi-warehouse logic, landed costs, manufacturing, serious B2B pricing: this is where Zoho thins out and Odoo’s ERP heritage shows.
- Price honesty. Zoho One’s per-employee pricing is famously aggressive and genuinely cheap for what’s included. If your needs fit inside it, it’s hard to beat on cost. Odoo costs more in implementation but repays in operational depth; which maths wins depends on your complexity.
- Customisation ceiling. Zoho customises through Deluge scripts and Creator apps within platform bounds. Odoo’s open source removes the ceiling entirely, which matters only if you’ll actually hit Zoho’s; retailers with non-standard operations usually do.
- Where Zoho One genuinely wins. Service businesses, agencies and sales-led SMEs whose operational footprint is light: CRM, email, projects, basic invoicing. There, Zoho’s breadth-per-pound is excellent and Odoo would be underused.
How we’d help you choose
- Requirements from your operation, not a feature grid. We map how your business actually runs and which capabilities are load-bearing rather than nice to have. Feature checklists reward the vendor with the longest list, not the best fit for you.
- Total cost over five years, written down. Licensing, implementation, customisation, hosting, and the ongoing cost of the workarounds you’d keep. The honest number is rarely the sticker price on either side.
- The customisation and lock-in test. What happens when you need something the standard product doesn’t do, and how hard it is to leave later. This is where open source changes the maths, and where we’ll say so plainly.
- A proof before a commitment. Where it matters, we’d rather show the awkward part of your workflow running than argue about it in a slide. Evidence beats persuasion.
- An honest recommendation, even against us. We implement Odoo, so read us accordingly, but we’d rather lose a project than win a bad fit. If the alternative is right for you, we’ll say so.
