Do I need an ERP for Shopify?

Do I need an ERP for my Shopify store?

Not every Shopify brand needs an ERP, and we would rather tell you that honestly than sell you one you do not need yet. But there is a real point where Shopify plus a stack of apps stops being enough, and staying past it costs more, in hours and in mistakes, than making the move. Here is how to tell which side of that line you are on.

The real signs

Signs you have actually outgrown Shopify plus apps

You are adding apps to patch the same problem

Each new inventory, accounting or reporting app promises to close the gap the last one did not. If you have three or four covering overlapping ground, that is the pattern, not a coincidence.

Reconciliation is now someone's actual job

If a real chunk of a person's week is spent making Shopify, your accounts and your stock agree with each other, the manual layer has become a cost centre in its own right.

You have added a channel, a warehouse, or wholesale

A second store, a 3PL, a marketplace or B2B terms all add a dimension Shopify plus apps was never built to hold cleanly. Each one makes the workaround stack heavier.

Decisions are made on numbers nobody fully trusts

When margin, stock or cash figures come with a caveat about which spreadsheet is most current, the business is already paying the cost of not having one system of record.

The honest other side

If you are single channel, single warehouse, and Xero is coping, you probably do not need one yet.

An ERP is a real commitment, in cost and in change management, and it is the wrong call for a brand that a good app stack still genuinely serves. If none of the signs above are true for you, the better move is to keep things simple and revisit this once a second channel, a warehouse, or wholesale actually arrives. We would rather say that than take on a project that does not fit.

How we do it

When it is time, Odoo becomes the backbone Shopify sells on top of

When the signs above genuinely apply, we build the operational backbone on Odoo, the open-source commerce ERP, and connect Shopify to it with our own connector. Shopify keeps doing what it does best, selling; Odoo takes over stock, purchasing, accounting and reporting as one system of record.

For Gandys, that point arrived at three Shopify stores, marketplaces and a 3PL: past that, spreadsheets and apps could no longer hold the operation together, and one owned system replaced them. If you are not sure which side of the line you are on, a free Odoo health check or a discovery call will tell you honestly, not just sell you the bigger option.
