How to Sync Shopify Inventory with Odoo
Inventory sync is the part of a Shopify-Odoo integration that protects revenue directly: get it right and overselling ends; get it wrong and you refund angry customers weekly. This guide covers the architecture that works and the settings that matter.
The core principle: Odoo owns stock truth, Shopify receives it. Everything else is detail on that spine.
What it takes in practice
- One stock authority. All channels (Shopify, POS, marketplaces, wholesale) deduct from Odoo’s stock pool, and Odoo pushes available quantity to Shopify. Two-way stock editing is how phantom inventory is born.
- Sync available-to-sell, not on-hand. Push Odoo’s unreserved quantity (on hand minus reserved for existing orders), so Shopify never sells units already promised elsewhere. This distinction alone prevents most oversells.
- Location mapping. Map Odoo warehouses to Shopify locations explicitly, including 3PL locations if fulfilment is outsourced. Multi-location Shopify needs deliberate mapping, not defaults.
- Sync frequency by velocity. Fast-moving SKUs justify frequent scheduled pushes; the long tail can update less often. Scheduled batches through Shopify’s APIs respect rate limits and stay verifiable.
- Buffer rules for safety. Optional per-channel buffers (hold back N units or a percentage) protect against burst-selling between sync cycles during peaks. Cheap insurance for Black Friday.
- Reconciliation as routine. A scheduled comparison of Odoo vs Shopify quantities with a variance report, so drift is caught in a report rather than a customer complaint.
When to do this yourself, and when to call us
The steps above are genuinely followable, and a capable team can get a basic sync running from them. What a guide can’t hand you is the part that fails quietly: a connector that survives Shopify and marketplace API version changes, the reconciliation instinct to catch numbers that are lying before a customer does, and someone accountable when a sync drops orders on your busiest day. If you’d rather own a working integration than babysit a fragile one, that’s our job. See the Shopify-Odoo connector and our integration services.
