How to Integrate Shopify with Odoo (Guide)

This is the practical, vendor-honest guide to connecting Shopify and Odoo: what actually syncs, the decisions you must make before installing anything, and the order of operations that avoids the classic mistakes. It reflects how we run real implementations with our own connector, but the sequence applies whichever connector you choose.

Read this before you install a connector, not after. Most integration pain is decisions made accidentally.

What it takes in practice

  • Step 1: Decide the system of record. Before any sync: who owns products, prices and stock? Our strong recommendation is Odoo owns operational truth and Shopify displays it. Bidirectional everything sounds flexible and creates conflict loops.
  • Step 2: Clean and map the catalogue. Match SKUs between systems, resolve variant structures (Shopify options to Odoo attributes), and fix duplicates before first sync. A dirty first import is the gift that keeps costing.
  • Step 3: Configure order flow deliberately. Choose your automation level: orders arriving as drafts for review, or auto-validated with stock allocation. Decide invoice policy (none, draft, posted, paid) per your finance team’s actual workflow.
  • Step 4: Map taxes and payments before go-live. UK VAT rates, EU OSS if relevant, and payment gateway mapping to Odoo journals. Getting tax mapping wrong is the most expensive class of integration error because it lands in your VAT return.
  • Step 5: Test the full loop on staging. One test order through the entire life: placed, synced, picked, shipped, tracking back to Shopify, refunded partially. Then and only then, connect production.
  • Step 6: Reconcile weekly at first. Order counts and stock levels compared across both systems weekly for the first month. Trust is earned by evidence, then the checks can space out.

When to do this yourself, and when to call us

The steps above are genuinely followable, and a capable team can get a basic sync running from them. What a guide can’t hand you is the part that fails quietly: a connector that survives Shopify and marketplace API version changes, the reconciliation instinct to catch numbers that are lying before a customer does, and someone accountable when a sync drops orders on your busiest day. If you’d rather own a working integration than babysit a fragile one, that’s our job. See the Shopify-Odoo connector and our integration services.

Common questions

How long does a Shopify-Odoo integration take?
With a maintained connector and a clean catalogue: days to two weeks including testing. Catalogue cleanup is the usual schedule variable, not the software.
Webhooks or scheduled sync?
Scheduled API fetching wins for reliability: webhooks drop silently under load. This is an architecture choice we made deliberately in our connector after production experience.
Can we sync historical orders?
Yes, backfill to a chosen date is normal, and worth doing so reporting and customer history start complete. Scope the depth deliberately: all-time history is rarely worth the noise.
Which system should own product data?
Usually Odoo once you're past a single store: it becomes the master and pushes to Shopify, so stock and SKUs stay consistent across every channel. A single store with light operations can keep Shopify as master, which is exactly the step-1 decision.
Do we need to pause the store to go live?
No. The integration is built and reconciled on staging against a copy of your live data, and cutover is a planned switch rather than downtime. Customers keep buying throughout.
